VIA Rail 'The Canadian'

This morning you will be collected from your hotel and transferred by coach to Toronto Train Station where you will board VIA Rail’s The Canadian at approximately 9:55am. This panoramic 3-night train journey allows you to appreciate the diversity of Canadian nature while marvelling at the spectacular views from your comfortable Sleeper Plus Class Cabin. Over the next three days, VIA Rail staff onboard the train will be available including a dedicated onboard attendant.

  • Explore Ontario’s diverse landscapes, from Toronto’s urban area to the peaceful, hilly countryside around the Great Lakes and the wild territories of the north.
  • Cross the southern part of Manitoba and admire undulating prairies, picturesque towns and pristine lakes surrounded by various species of trees. Keep your eyes peeled: you may catch a glimpse of a black bear, a wapiti or a bison herd.
  • Travel across the south-central part of Saskatchewan, between plains, hills, rivers and lakes. Discover the pretty city of Saskatoon, nicknamed “the Paris of the Prairies”.

Disembark at Jasper Train Station early this morning at around 6:30am, where your expert Western Canada Tour Leader will greet you and accompany you for the rest of the holiday through the Canadian Rockies.

Board your deluxe coach and make a stop for breakfast at a local restaurant before embarking on your journey through the enchanting Jasper National Park. Spanning over 11,000 square kms, Jasper is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover extraordinary sights, including the serene Pyramid and Patricia Lakes, known for their crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain reflections. Visit Medicine Lake, Maligne Canyon and the spectacular Maligne Lake, renowned for its vibrant blue waters and the iconic Spirit Island, one of the most photographed locations in the world.

Our multi-stop Canada tours are carefully designed to give an insight into the highlights, culture and unique beauty of each region. Each day will be different, with a combination of travel days, sightseeing and free time to explore or take a breather as you wish.

Tipping (Gratuities) in Canada

Tips reflect your satisfaction about the services received throughout your stay. While gratuities are at the discretion of each passenger below are customary guidelines for providing gratuities:

Bedding

Please note most bedding in Canada is based on twin (two beds). Double (one large bed) can be requested however it is subject to hotel room availability.

Transfers

Group tour airport transfers are included providing you are arriving on the first and last day of tour.

Baggage

Each person is entitled to a strict maximum of one bag not exceeding 20kg on tour, superseding any other baggage allowance. One of the reasons is due to coach requirements and limitation. Checked in baggage for the VIA Rail must be checked-in at least 45min prior to departure at the terminal. There are limited storage options on VIA Rail, therefore please keep carry-on light, with only necessities for 3 nights on the train.

Toronto to Jasper – Sleeper Plus Class Onboard VIA Rail’s ‘The Canadian’

Cabin details below are based on Cabin for 2.

  • Room size: 7ft 3in. X 5ft, excluding 2ft 9in x 2ft 1in for private washroom
  • Mattress size: approximately 71in x 31in (180 cm x 79 cm)
  • Private washroom available inside each double bedroom
  • Mirror over sink with electrical razor outlet (110 vac.)
  • Individual control for heating, ventilation and air conditioning system
  • Limited space for baggage (see our baggage policy)
  • Day time: two comfortable sofa chairs
  • Nighttime: upper and lower beds replace chairs
  • Large window with blind
  • Access to a shower room (one shower room per car)
  • Shower towels and amenities provided
  • Door locks on the inside only (no individual key)
  • Other amenities: small closet, drinking water, and towels, pillows, sheets and blankets supplied.

IMPORTANT: Upper beds require the passengers to climb a ladder with 4 steps to access their sleeping accommodation. This may not be suitable for persons with reduced mobility.

Solo travellers: Please note a Cabin for 1 is slightly smaller and features some of the amenities above including a private toilet and sink (however the bed does cover the toilet at night). Ask our team for details and we can share VIA Rail cabin specifications with you.


Meals:

Enjoy the art of dining and the spectacular views onboard ‘The Canadian’. Savour a three-course meal with carefully selected products from Canadian artisans. Three meals a day are included in your experience (excluding Breakfast on the first and last day due to embark/disembark train times). Bar service is available for purchase. Special meal requests such as allergies, vegetarian and special diets may be catered for providing advance notice is given.

Solo Occupancy

A single supplement starts from $1,000 per person and the amount varies per departure date and seasonality. The single supplement is payable in addition to the twin share price for solo occupancy. Please note there are a limited number of solo rooms available per departure.

Important Information 

Exclusions

Meals not stated, beverages, optional sightseeing, travel insurance (strongly recommended), Canada ETA (Visa), tipping, personal expenses and anything not explicitly specified are at your own expense.

Payment

A first deposit from $499 per person is required to secure your booking. A second deposit (partial payment) is due 10 months before departure – the amount to be advised at the time of booking. The final balance will be due 5 months before departure. Full payment is due at the time of booking for departures within 5 months.

Fitness

A good level of fitness is required. You are required to move about unassisted, including boarding and alighting vehicles and other forms of transportation, walking up and down flights of stairs, and navigating uneven terrain and footpaths. This trip is not suitable for travellers requiring wheelchair, mobility scooters or facilities for disabled guests. Other walking aids may be permitted if you are able move about unassisted at the required pace. For advice on whether this trip is suitable for you, you must disclose physical ailments at the time of booking.

Pace

The pace of this tour is medium paced. The tour covers multiple regions within Canada and can involve early starts and long travel days. Please be aware many scenic attractions in Canada can only be reached by walking through national parks, trails and stairs. As some attractions may be very busy, please remain with your dedicated Tour Leader/Guide (s).

Child

This tour is best enjoyed to adult travellers and is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Children 12 years and above are subject to the adult price and must be accompanied by an adult.

Price

Surcharges may apply for select travel periods and departure cities. Prices are correct at time of publication and are subject to availability, change, cancellation or withdrawal without notice. All prices are in Australian dollars per person twin share unless stated otherwise.

Amendment

Each amendment is subject to a fee from $75 per person. Additional fees and fare differences from third-party suppliers including air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers may apply.

Cancellation

Cancellation is subject to a fee from $550 per person. Additional fees and fare differences from third-party suppliers including air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers may apply.

Deviation

Any request to deviate from the original dates or routing, including early arrival and stay behind, is subject to a flight deviation fee from $150 per person plus applicable airfare and tax difference.

Passport

For international travel, each customer must provide a copy of the passport photo page at the time of booking. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure all names are full names exactly matched to the passport with six months validity beyond trip completion. The customer is liable for all fees due to incorrect names, invalid passport information and expired passports.

Canada Visa (ETA)

Please note that Canada has an electronic travel authorization (ETA), which requires all international visitors to register online before traveling to Canada. USA Visa (ESTA)

**Please note this 12 Day itinerary does not visit USA therefore an ESTA is not required**

In the event you are deviating, stopping in USA or extending and cruising the Alaska’s Inside Passage then you will require a USA ESTA. All eligible travellers who wish to travel to the United States must request permission and pay fees according to an established process. Health

It is the responsibility of the customer to check and comply with the health, vaccination, COVID-19 and immigration requirements of each origin and destination country, and health requirements imposed by air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers. Vaccinations, testing and quarantine costs are the expense of the customer. Comprehensive travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage is strongly recommended. Drink only bottled water with intact seals.

Money

The currency in Canada is Canadian Dollars. ATMs are widely available in most cities. They accept major credit cards including at international hotels and restaurants. In some smaller cities, using international cards will be limited and local currency is suggested.

Transfers

Group tour airport transfers are included providing you are arriving on the first and last day of the tour. Any deviation from the group pre or post tour will result in forfeiture of the transfers.

Meals

Please notify us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements and allergies. We will pass on your requirements but cannot guarantee that they can be met as certain choices may be limited or not catered for. You are encouraged to reconfirm requirements with your tour leader whilst on tour.

Accommodation

All accommodation featured in this itinerary is based on 3-4 star hotels. Please note many hotels in Canada are either self-rated or locally rated. All hotel rooms will feature either a twin room (two single beds) or a double room (1 Queen bed). All bedding requests cannot be guaranteed however all special requests should be made known at time of booking. VIA Rail is strictly twin beds only (1 upper and 1 lower). All hotel rooms are lead-in category or run of house unless otherwise specified. Hotel names mentioned are indicative and subject to change based, with final group tour hotels being confirmed on your final documentation. The standard check-in time is from 3pm and check-out is prior to 10am.

International Flights

Flights are booked approximately 8 to 10 months prior to departure. The flights included in your package are based on Air Canada or Cathay Pacific with a specific predetermined airfare allowance. Should there be a significant increase in airfares, fuel levies, taxes or government fees at the time of booking flights, then an airfare supplement may be imposed. The flights team will discuss options with you prior to ticketing, should this situation arise. Flights may not operate daily or directly to your destination. No show of any flight sectors will result in the automatic cancellation of all onward flights by the airline.

Fuel

In the unlikely event of a significant increase in fuel costs levied by third-party air, land and cruise transportation operators before travel, a fuel supplement may be passed on to the customer.

Group size

You will meet like-minded travellers on tour and may even make lifelong friends. This holiday will proceed with a smaller group size based on a minimum 25 passengers and a maximum group size of approximately 40 passengers. If the tour does not operate, you will be offered a credit.

Optional Extras

Optional sightseeing tours are special unique experiences that you may add to your tour. The below optional sightseeing is payable at time of booking or up until final payment date. The sightseeing is subject to weather conditions and operational capabilities including minimum numbers required to operate. In the event the sightseeing may not operate, an alternative will be offered or a refund.

Itinerary

The operating schedule and itinerary may be impacted without notice by adverse weather, seasonal factors, closures, local conditions, COVID-19 or other factors beyond our control including force majeure. The itinerary and its order, sightseeing and transportation may be adjusted as deemed appropriate by the operator for optimum safety, enjoyment and operation. Any reference to ‘optional’, ‘not included’ or ‘exclusions/excluded’ means at your own expense.

Train Transportation

Due to factors outside of our control, such as operational changes, last-minute track maintenance, or unfavourable weather conditions, train travel may be substituted with a flight to maintain the continuity of the itinerary while prioritising the safety of all passengers.

Breakaway

Customers must remain with the tour group at all times and must not leave the tour unless written approval is provided before departure.

Documentation

Final documentation will be emailed no later than 4 weeks prior to departure.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included and is strongly recommended. Ask our holiday experts for great coverage options.

Force majeure means any natural disaster, accident, fire, act of God, act of war, terrorism, legally binding judgment, injunction, action of a court or other relevant authority, emergency, unplanned repairs, maintenance, strike, industrial dispute, work ban, blockade or picketing, travel ban, pandemic, epidemic or outbreak of infectious disease, or other event beyond our reasonable direct or indirect control. In case of force majeure or other extraordinary event that prevents safe travel, the supplier reserves the right to adjust, postpone or cancel the trip.
