Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Shizuoka (approx 165 km)

Leaving the bustling metropolis of Tokyo behind, the tour will take you through picturesque landscapes, with Mount Fuji’s majestic silhouette looming closer with every passing mile. Our first stop is the famous Mount Fuji 5th station, situated 2,300 metres above sea level. From here, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Fuji Five Lakes area, making it a popular spot for all, even if you’re not climbing the mountain. Next head to the serene Lake Kawaguchi, where you can admire the reflection of the mountain in the tranquil waters and capture breathtaking photos of this iconic landmark. From there, the adventure continues to Oshino-Hakkai, a charming village renowned for its crystal-clear spring water and traditional thatched-roof houses. This morning, following a delightful breakfast, the tour sets out on a day-long journey from Shizuoka to the enchanting city of Kyoto. Along the way we will make a stop to take in one last breathtaking view of Mount Fuji, before resuming our 370-kilometer voyage to Kyoto.

Today we explore Kyoto’s timeless beauty and rich history. The journey begins with a visit to Arashiyama, a district renowned for its towering bamboo groves and the iconic Togetsu Bridge. Spend some free time here walking through the bamboo grove or wandering down the central street lined with delicious food vendors and boutique stores. Heading back into Kyoto city, the tour will take to Ponto-cho, with its picturesque narrow alleys, exclusive dining establishments, and charming ambiance along the Kamo River. This leads to the historic Gion district famed for its traditional teahouses and the presence of geiko and maiko – you may even spot one travelling between functions. We end the day at the gorgeous 1350-year-old Yasaka Shrine with the remainder of the afternoon and evening free for you to explore at your own pace.

Optional Kyoto Tour – Discover the history of Kyoto and take part in a tea ceremony from $279pp

Experience the timelessness of Kyoto on a captivating optional tour. We begin the tour at the iconic Kiyomizu-Dera, a temple complex perched gracefully on the hills, offering panoramic views and a spiritual ambience. Wander through the charming streets of Ninenzaka, steeped in history and lined with traditional machiya buildings. What makes Fushimi Inari truly unique is its thousands of striking vermilion torii gates that form a captivating pathway up the forested slopes of Mount Inari. This is a must-do on a trip to Kyoto. Next, we move on to Nara where you’ll visit the awe-inspiring Todaiji Temple, home to the colossal Great Buddha statue, the world’s largest bronze Buddha. The temple’s grandeur and historical significance are truly remarkable. Afterward, encounter some of the tame deer of Nara Park which have become a symbol of the city and have even been designated as a natural treasure. The day concludes in vibrant Osaka, Japan’s third largest city renowned for its extroverted locals, boisterous nightlife, and amazing food scene.

Osaka – Kurashiki – Hiroshima (approx 340 km)

Today we depart Osaka to make our way down to Hiroshima. On the way, we stop by the picturesque town of Kurashiki. Sometimes referred to as “The Venice of Japan”, Kurashiki’s willow-lined river is criss-crossed by stone bridges and lined by traditional houses and large whitewashed warehouses dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods. Like Venice, this picturesque area is a living town, with shops, vibrant cafes and restaurants and locals going about their daily lives. Meander through the town and watch as small boats ferry passengers back and forth along the river. In the afternoon arrive at the final destination of the day, the historically important Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Free Day

Enjoy a free day to explore the Hiroshima’s cultural wonders at your own pace. The modern city and prefecture of Hiroshima is defined by an inseparable connection to peace, shrines and museums. Hiroshima is also famous for savoury okonomiyaki pancakes, saltwater eel (anago) and other culinary delights.

Optional Hiroshima Tour – Journey through the history of Hiroshima and beauty of Miyajima from $259pp

This optional day tour is an unforgettable journey through Hiroshima, tracing its poignant history and breathtaking beauty. Begin at the Peace Memorial Museum, where stories of survival and hope amid tragedy unfold. Then stroll through the tranquil expanse of the Peace Park, pausing at the various memorials and monuments dedicated to remembrance. Towards the end of the park is the Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing in the area of the atomic bombing which now serves as an enduring symbol of the past and a hope for peace. As the day continues, we board a ferry to enchanting Miyajima. While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for “shrine island”. This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine’s main buildings are built over water and depending on the tide, can look to float just above it. If the tide is out, you can easily walk out to the shrine’s large and imposing vermillion torii gate. The island is also home to wild deer that wander the streets, especially in the lead-up to the shrine. Spend time wandering through the island’s quaint streets lined with souvenir shops, cafes, and even fresh-oyster stalls. This is a delightful end to the day that hopefully demonstrates Hiroshima’s resilience, charm, and beauty.

Hiroshima – Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu (approx 300 km)

A trip to Japan wouldn’t be complete without a ride on the iconic bullet train (shinkansen). Reaching an average speed of 270 km, watch cities and countryside smoothly rush by as we leave Japan’s main island Honshu for the the island of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost major island, a remote subtropical paradise famous for steaming volcanoes and natural hot springs. Disembark the bullet train in Kitakyushu and continue by coach onto Beppu in Oita prefecture, famous for hot springs and unspoiled highlands. With more hot springs (onsen) than anywhere else in Japan, Beppu takes the crown as the nation’s top onsen hot spring destination. The afternoon is spent exploring the geological wonders of Beppu including a tour of the Hells of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri) and a visit to the Beppu Onsen Museum which delves into the science, history, and culture of the hot springs.

Today is a free day to relax or explore the town of Beppu at your own pace. Although loved by domestic tourists, Beppu is still a remote, mysterious and steaming onsen secret for many international travellers. It boasts the largest number of hot spring sources as well as the largest amount of hot spring water in all of Japan!

Optional Oita Tour – Step back in time in Kitsuki with a kimono experience from $229pp

On this day tour we invite you to time travel to Japan’s Edo era with a trip to Oita’s castle town Kitsuki along with a kimono experience to help you to get into the spirit of the period. Kitsuki boasts a mesmerizing historic district adorned with former samurai residences, a quaint merchant area, gently sloping cobblestone streets, and what could possibly be Japan’s smallest castle. This town has meticulously preserved its historical charm, devoid of modern distractions like power lines and contemporary signage, fostering an atmosphere of authenticity. This makes it the perfect place to don traditional Japanese attire and leisurely stroll through its streets. As part of our tour, both men and women – or shall we say, feudal lords and ladies – will have the opportunity to select from a range of beautiful kimonos or yukatas (summer kimonos). The adept staff will guide you in the art of adorning these garments, then you are invited to wander through the town for a couple of unhurried hours, taking in its historical marvels. Kitsuki locals also actively encourage visitors to tour the town’s attractions while bedecked in traditional kimono dress and will offer complimentary access to select historical samurai residences and the Kitsuki Castle Town Historical Museum. Moreover, various cafes and eateries extend special discounts, inviting you to savour the local delights in this captivating setting. Afterwards, we’ll visit Kitsuki Castle before making our way back to Beppu.

Beppu – Yufuin – Kumamoto (approx 130 km)

This morning we depart Beppu and make our way to Kumamoto with some scenic stops along the way. The first stop will be in the picturesque town of Yufuin. Here you can stroll through quaint streets, pop into some boutique and handicraft stores, and admire the serene lake. From there the tour continues to the Daikanbo Viewpoint. This lookout will give you dramatic 360-degree views of the active volcano Mounts Aso, its caldera, and the rolling grasslands surrounding it. On a clear day this point gives you the best views of the central 5 peaks of Mount Aso which naturally form the silhouette of a sleeping Buddha. Then upon arriving at Kumamoto city, we visit Kumamoto Castle, considered one of Japan’s most impressive structures with its imposing black exterior and steep ramparts. Despite the castle being damaged in a 2016 earthquake, a full restoration is taking place with all major sections having reopened in 2021.

Kumamoto – Nagasaki (approx 100 km)

Set off for the historic port city of Nagasaki, using a ferry to cross the calm inland sea and arrive at the Nagasaki peninsula. A tour of this city begins in the lively Chinatown area, once synonymous with Western trade. Wander through the colourful streets, absorbing the lively atmosphere and discovering the cultural fusion that defines this district. Next, cross the iconic Megane Bashi Bridge, known as the Spectacles Bridge, a charming stone arch bridge offering picturesque views of the Nakashima River. Finally, stroll down Teramachi Street, lined with historic temples and shrines, providing a serene contrast to the dynamic cityscape.

Nagasaki Free Day

Today is a free day to relax or explore more of Nagasaki at your own pace. Although synonymous with the dropping of the second atomic bomb, there is much more to vibrant Nagasaki. Its ancient cultural and trade roots are backdropped by rolling hills and forested islands. The historic foreign influence and beautiful nature gives the city a distinctive character and feel compared to other Japanese cities.

Nagasaki – Saga – Fukuoka (approx 160 km)

We continue to Fukuoka with a stop along the way in Saga Prefecture. Here we visit Arita renowned as the birthplace of Japanese ceramics and one of the main porcelain-producing towns in Japan with rich artistic traditions. In Arita keep an eye out for ceramic touches dotted throughout the streets including walls, statues and even a beautiful blue and white torii gate. The tour will visit Kouraku Kiln, where you can witness local artisans at work and perhaps pick up a souvenir of the most sought-after pottery. After an included lunch at a local restaurant, we head to the lively seaside town of Karatsu. Enjoy some free time to stroll around the Karatsu’s local kilns, boutique shops, restaurants, and traditional old houses. The tour then continues on to Fukuoka city for the night.

Today is a free day to relax or explore Fukuoka at your own pace. As the centre of international trade since ancient times, Fukuoka is long considered the gateway to Japan and Kyushu. Fukuoka is a very popular holiday destination both for domestic and international tourists due to a unique melding of bustling city life, traditional Japanese culture and modern living. Fukuoka has some of the best shopping, cuisine and nightlife in Japan, including open air food stalls (yatai) serving Hakata ramen, the signature dish.

Optional Fukuoka Tour – Immerse yourself in the charm of Fukuoka $229pp

Today’s optional day tour explores the wonderful sites of Fukuoka prefecture and takes in a hands-on traditional craft experience along the way. The first stop is in the southern area of the prefecture in Yanagawa. Famous for its narrow canals and waterways, the best way to explore this quaint and scenic destination is to get on the water. Hop onboard a donko-bune, similar to a Venetian gondola, and drift leisurely along the river, enjoying insightful commentary on Yanagawa’s impressive history along the way. Then enjoy free time to explore the town on foot. Follow the waterways while waving at the small boats passing by. Try the local sweets or if you’re hungry enough a good suggestion is Yanagawa’s local specialty unagi no seiro-mushi – a bowl of rice mixed with sweet sauce, topped with juicy steamed eel, and thinly sliced egg. Next, it is onto an Okawa Kumiko workshop where skilled artisans will introduce you to their craft. Okawa Kumiko wood joinery is a form of traditional woodwork that combines both beauty and precision, boasting a history of approximately 300 years. Take part and make a take-home souvenir for yourself or pick up something more elaborate designed by the master craftsmen. The final stop is a visit to the revered Daizaifu Tenmangu Shrine. While the main hall is currently undergoing renovations, the grounds are stunning and offer a serene finale before returning to Fukuoka city for your final night.

Cherry Blossoms: In spring, late March to early April is historically the best time to view pink and white cherry blossoms (sakura).

Hydrangea Blooms: In the warmer and less crowded months, you may catch blue, purple and pink flowers such as native hydrangea (ajisai) from late May to July.

Autumn Leaves: From mid-October to late November, the colourful leaves (koyo) of autumn are what cherry blossoms are to spring. Witness fall foliage turn different shades of vivid red, orange and yellow.

Pace

The pace of this tour is moderate. The tour covers several prefectures of Japan and involves some early starts and some long travel days – see the itinerary for an indication of the distances travelled by coach. One to two nights at each destination is standard. Accommodation

The size of hotel rooms in Japan are generally smaller than Western standards. Hotels are carefully hand-selected for room sizes at least 18 sqm for your comfort. Single rooms are typically smaller than twin rooms. Hotels in Japan generally have very few rooms with double bed configuration. Requests for rooms with double beds cannot be guaranteed in advance and if not available, twin beds will be provided. Hotel names referenced are to be used as an indicative guide for the standard of accommodation to expect. Actual hotels may differ and will be confirmed on your final documentation. All hotel ratings are local or self-ratings provided by the supplier. All rooms are lead-in category or run of house unless otherwise specified. Due to the popular culture of smoking in Japan, non-smoking or deodourised rooms will be requested by default – please notify hotel reception if this an issue. The standard check-in time is after 3pm and check-out is before 10am – actual times may vary.

Meals

Breakfasts offered by the Japanese accommodation providers are typically buffet style, with limited vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options. For meals not included, you will be taken to places with options where possible. Please notify us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements and allergies. We endeavour to pass on your dietary requirements but cannot guarantee that they can be met as certain choices may be limited or not catered for. You are required to reconfirm dietary requests with your tour leader whilst on tour.

Baggage

Each person is entitled to a strict maximum of one bag not exceeding 20kg on tour, superseding any other baggage allowance. Excess baggage is not permitted. You are strongly encouraged to pack lightly. An additional light day bag or backpack is permitted on the coach. Due to bullet train baggage restrictions, your bag will be transferred separately, and you may be required to pack a separate light bag or backpack containing overnight essentials. Porterage is not included, and you are required to carry your own bags. Luggage and personal effects are your own risk, and we hold no liability for lost or damaged belongings.

Group size

You will meet like-minded travellers on tour and may even make lifelong friends. This holiday will proceed with a minimum group size of approximately 30 passengers and a maximum group size of approximately 36 passengers. If the tour does not operate, you will be offered a credit. The operation of optional programs is subject to a minimum group size. If the minimum number for optional programs is not reached, you will be refunded.

Exclusions

Meals not stated, drinks on meals, airport transfers, optional programs, travel insurance (strongly recommended), visas (if required), tipping, personal expenses and anything not explicitly specified are at your own expense.

Payment

A first deposit from $499 per person is required to secure your booking. A second deposit (partial payment) is due 10 months before departure – the amount to be advised at the time of booking. The final balance will be due 5 months before departure. Full payment is due at the time of booking for departures within 5 months.

Solo Occupancy

A single supplement from $1700 per person is payable in addition to the twin share price for solo occupancy. Single rooms are typically smaller than twin rooms in Japan.

Triple Share

Triple share is not available.

Extra Accommodation

Pre-tour accommodation in Tokyo with breakfast in the same tour hotel, or post-tour accommodation in Fukuoka with breakfast in the same tour hotel, can be added for one or two persons subject to availability of the following rates; Valid for travel in May to September: from $290 per room per night; Valid for travel in March, April, October and November: from $290 per room per night. Airport transfers are not included.

Child

This tour is best enjoyed by adult travellers and is not suitable for children under 10 years of age. Children 10 years and above are subject to the adult price and must be accompanied by an adult.

Price

Surcharges may apply for select travel periods and departure cities. Prices are correct at time of publication and are subject to availability, change, cancellation or withdrawal without notice. All prices are in Australian dollars per person twin share unless stated otherwise.

Amendment

Each amendment is subject to a fee from $75 per person. Additional fees and fare differences from third-party suppliers including air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers may apply.

Cancellation

Cancellation is subject to a fee from $550 per person. Additional fees and fare differences from third-party suppliers including air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers may apply.

Deviation

Any request to deviate from the original dates or routing, including early arrival and stay behind, is subject to a flight deviation fee from $150 per person plus applicable airfare and tax difference. Packaged tour extensions are not subject to the deviation fee (applicable airfare and tax difference may still apply) if booked according to the original advertised dates and routing.

Passport

For international travel, each customer must provide a copy of the passport photo page at the time of booking. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure all names are full names exactly matched to the passport with six months validity beyond trip completion. The customer is liable for all fees due to incorrect names, invalid passport information and expired passports.

Visa

A visa is generally not required for Australian passport holders visiting Japan for the purpose of short-term tourism, however, this policy is subject to change without notice. Visa requirements for each origin and destination country are the responsibility of the customer to check and obtain (if required) with the local consulate or embassy. The customer is liable for all visa application costs and fees due to the failure to obtain the required travel documents.

Health

It is the responsibility of the customer to check and comply with the health, vaccination, COVID-19 and immigration requirements of each origin and destination country, and health requirements imposed by air, tour, cruise and accommodation providers. Vaccinations, testing and quarantine costs are the expense of the customer. Comprehensive travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage is strongly recommended.

Tipping

Customary tour guide tipping from JPY500 per person per day is strongly recommended as a gesture of appreciation for the service provided.

Flights

The outbound flight may depart one day prior to day 1 shown on the itinerary. The inbound flight may arrive one day after the final day shown on the itinerary. Flights are booked approximately 8 to 10 months prior to departure. The flights included in your package are based on a specific predetermined airfare allowance. Should there be a significant increase in airfares, fuel levies, taxes or government fees at the time of booking flights, then an airfare supplement may be imposed. The flights team will discuss options with you prior to ticketing, should this situation arise. Flights may not operate daily or directly to your destination. No show of any flight sectors will result in the automatic cancellation of all onward flights by the airline.

Fuel

In the unlikely event of a significant increase in fuel costs levied by third-party air, land and cruise transportation operators before travel, a fuel supplement may be passed on to the customer.

Blooms

The timing of cherry blossom, autumn leaf and other blooms are not guaranteed as they are highly seasonal from region to region and subject to changing climate conditions. Suggested dates are only an estimate of the best viewing periods based on historical data. Cherry blossom festival season is one of the most incredible times to visit Japan. Cherry blossom full blooms last over a one week time window, during which, it is lively and crowded every year and expected to be especially busy due to unprecedented pent up demand for post-pandemic travel to Japan.

Tour Extensions

Packaged tour extensions must be booked at least 10 months before departure or before flights are issued.

Optional Programs

Optional programs are subject to a minimum of 15 passengers and must be booked at least 5 months before departure. If the optional programs do not operate, you will be refunded.

Itinerary

The operating schedule and itinerary may be impacted without notice by adverse weather, seasonal factors, closures, local conditions, COVID-19 or other factors beyond our control including force majeure. If attractions are not available due to reasons beyond our control such as closures or adverse weather, alternatives will be provided where possible. The itinerary and its order, sightseeing and transportation may be adjusted as deemed appropriate by the operator for optimum safety, enjoyment and operation. Any reference to ‘optional’, ‘not included’ or ‘exclusions/excluded’ means at your own expense.

Breakaway

Customers must remain with the tour group at all times and must not leave the tour unless written approval is provided before departure.

Documentation

Final documentation will be emailed within two weeks of departure. For packages consisting of multiple tours or countries, documentation will be emailed individually within two weeks of departure of each respective tour.

Force Majeure

Force majeure means any natural disaster, accident, fire, act of God, act of war, terrorism, legally binding judgment, injunction, action of a court or other relevant authority, emergency, unplanned repairs, maintenance, strike, industrial dispute, work ban, blockade or picketing, travel ban, pandemic, epidemic or outbreak of infectious disease, or other event beyond our reasonable direct or indirect control. In case of force majeure or other extraordinary event that prevents safe travel, the supplier reserves the right to adjust, postpone or cancel the trip.
